A Sock Recipe for a Man

Handknit Socks
My husband’s favorite gift to receive are hand knit socks. I try to make them for our anniversary and his birthday each year with maybe a bonus thrown in on Valentine’s Day or Christmas. I thought I had gotten the basic pattern from one of the hundreds of knitting books I have, but I think the truth is that I’ve just cobbled together one in my mind that seems to work for him and I thought I better write it down. If you’re not a knitter, you can just skip this one.

What You’ll Need:

  • 400ish yards of fingering weight yarn
  • 5 size 1 double pointed needles

Gauge: 8sts./1 in.

CO64, placing 16 stitches evenly on four needles.

K2P2 rib for 1 1/2 inches

Knit in the round until the leg is 9 inches long.

To start the heel flap:

Purl back 32 stitches (placing all 32 on one needle) and then turn the sock over and knit back over those same 32 stitches slipping the first stitch and then k1, p1* repeat and then slip 1, purl back. Repeat this combination 14 times until the heel forms a square. The other two needles just hang out until the heel is done.

To turn the heel:

Slip 1, P 18sts., P2tog, P1, turn back to ride side.

Slip 1, K7, ssk, K1, turn to wrong side.

Slip 1, P8, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K9, ssk, K1. turn

Slip 1, P10, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K11, ssk, K1, turn

Slip 1, P12, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K13, ssk, K1, turn

Slip 1, P14, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K15, ssk, K1, turn

Slip 1, P16, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K16, ssk, K1, turn (20 stitches)

For heel gusset:

Handknit SocksUsing a spare needle, start picking up stitches along the right side (where you left off from the heel flap). This number always seems to vary for me and it doesn’t really matter as long as there are no holes and you have the same number on both sides of the heel gusset. I usually have to do an extra decrease on one side to even it up.

Then when you reach the needles that have been hanging out, knit all of those stitches on one needle (32 stitches) to free up an extra needle. If you have another needle handy, use that and skip putting all 32 on one needle. Pick up the stitches on the other side of the gusset plus 10 stitches from the heel. Knit the 10 leftover heel stitches on another needle and then knit up the gusset needles (this becomes needle 1). Count your stitches on both sides and plan to make decreases if necessary. Knit across the top stitches breaking them up into two needles (needle 2 & 3) of 16 stitches again now that you’ve got your other needle back (disregard if you had that extra needle). Needle 4 will have the other gusset and heel stitches. Just knit this round to get your stitches all spaced out evenly.

Round 1:

Needle 1: Knit to last 3 stitches and K2tog, K1

Needle 2 & 3: Knit

Needle 4: K1, ssk, knit to end

Round 2:

All needles: knit

Repeat rounds 1 &2 until you have 16 stitches each on needles 1 & 4.

Knit in the round until the foot of the sock from the heel measures 8 inches.

Round 1:

Needle 1 & 3: Knit to last three stitches and K2tog, K1

Needle 2 & 4: K1, ssk, knit to end

Round 2:

All needles: knit

Repeat both of the rounds 6 times. Then just do round 1 until you have 5 stitches on each needle.

Close the toe with the kitchener stitch (link to video).
